Some background: The Desktop Support Technician of the Year Award was introduced in 2011. Each year, HDI works jointly with the local chapters to identify and recognize the industry’s top desktop support technician. Desktop technicians nominated at the local chapter level have an opportunity to compete with their peers locally, regionally, and globally for this prestigious award.

Each nominator presents to the local chapter a personal business profile of the nominee, including specific attributes that demonstrate the nominee’s understanding of industry standards, commitment to excellent service, and record of consistently exceeding performance objectives.

The winners from each of HDI's five local chapter regions are invited to the HDI Annual Conference & Expo, where the winner of the Desktop Support Technician of the Year Award will be announced.Robert Half Technology, the premier sponsor, provides each regional winner with one conference registration package.

Living in the Disruption Economy: Why Our Customers are Screaming for Change and We’re Still Not Listening

As we progress as a society from the knowledge economy through the disruption economy, our customers are becoming more vocal about what they want and need from their service providers. No longer are customers willing to put up with bureaucratic and lethargic global enterprises who are slow to change and create unnecessary friction for the consumer. Customers are voting with their currency, choosing Uber over taxis, Amazon over the department store, Airbnb over hotels, and Netflix over the network TV station. If we are not careful in IT, we will also become extinct. We need to develop strategies that innovate, reduce friction and stop waiting for our customers to come to us. And knowledge is the key to our success.

Julie is a dynamic, engaging change agent who brings integrity and passion to everything. Through her books, articles, speaking, consulting, and teaching — her purpose is to change the world through thought provoking dialog and interaction. Julie has a B.S. degree in computer science from The Ohio State University, a MaED from the University of Phoenix, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Management and Organizational Leadership in Information Systems & Technology from the University of Phoenix. Sandy will share the five essential characteristics of leadership and why they were integral to her successful career. Attendees will leave identifying characteristics that you want to strengthen and the steps you will take to develop them, reducing frustration and advancing your career.

Sandy Seroskie has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and over 20 years of customer service, leadership and management experience. In 2014, Sandy joined Metro Construction Resources as a VP of Operations to bring focus to service excellence, process improvement and company growth. She was formerly the Director of Field Services Delivery at Carey International, the global leader in chauffeured services and ground transportation logistics management. Sandy created Carey’s Help Desk, managed system cutovers and assisted with leading teams for large events. Sandy’s key to success is her ability to bring cross-functional teams together, to work harmoniously, to meet the initiative’s goals and objectives.

Sandy is PASSIONATE about continuous learning and professional growth for herself, colleagues, and HDI members. Sandy has been an HDI member since 2000. With the desire to give back to the association and community, that had a profound effect on her personal and professional growth, Sandy became an HDI Capital Area Local Chapter Officer in 2003. During the last 14 years, Sandy has served in various roles, including President, VP of Communications, VP of Programs and VP of Content and Public Relations.

Sandy began volunteering for HDI national initiatives and was elected as a Member at Large on HDI’s Member Advisory Board. She continued working on national projects, including leading the creation of Local Chapter Officer Orientation Training. Sandy was honored to receive the Local Chapter Officer Rock of our Foundation Award in 2011 and served as HDI’s Member Advisory Board President from 2012 to 2013.

Sandy currently serves as an HDI National Officer and is HDI’s Capital Area’s President Emeritus. Thanks to the strength and support of HDI Capital Area Local Chapter’s Board of Directors, Sandy was named Local Chapter Officer of the Year in 2015. She is currently serving as a FUSION 17 Track Chair and has previously served on HDI’s Strategic Advisory, Editorial Boards and as Track Chair for previous HDI and FUSION Conferences. Sandy is extremely honored and incredibly humbled to be included in HDI’s Hall of Fame.

This session will show you the importance of staff development and some strategies for getting the most out of your employees through: goal setting, tools to choose the right employees for the right task, career roadmaps, succession planning, and more.

Melissa Jackman has more than 20 years of experience in managing and motivating support teams in blended internal/external support environments. As Help Desk Manager at Duquesne University, she is currently responsible for a team that supports approximately 15,000 users, and she's passionate about leadership and building and developing strong teams and individuals. Melissa served as the President of the HDI Steel City Chapter between 2015-2017.  She is now furthering our outreach for the chapter as the VP of Vendor Management.  She received her MA in Leadership from Duquesne University.
